  • Iran objects instrumental use of HR
Secretary of Iran Judiciary's Human Rights Council Kazem Gharibabadi emphasized Iran’s objection to instrumental use of human rights in a meeting on the sidelines of the 49th UN Human Rights Conference on Human Rights in Geneva.

Gharibabadi made the remarks in a meeting with Namibian Justice Minister Yvonne Dausab.

In the meeting, Gharibabadi named the improvements made in Iran on human rights issues and elaborated on the negative impacts of unilateral coercive measures and terrorism on enjoyment from human rights.

He also condemned the hypocritic approach of Western countries to the issue of human rights in Iran while violating Iranian people’s human rights by slapping unilateral sanctions.

Dausab announced the principled position of her country in opposing imposition of sanctions and unilateral coercive measures against developing countries, including Iran.

She also condemned instrumental use of human rights and exercise of double standards, saying that Human Rights Council should be a technical assembly for addressing human rights situation without politicization.

Gharibabadi also met with Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister G.L Pieris and Justice Minister Ali Sabry, where they discussed exploitation of human rights by Western countries and the US to put pressure on developing countries.

They also exchanged views on legal and political structures and human rights-related improvements in Iran and Sri Lanka.

Gharibabadi stressed the need to strengthen the process of conceptualization by the Non-Aligned Movement and considered issues such as the need to respect cultural diversity and oppose unilateral coercive actions as essential achievements of the Non-Aligned Movement that should be strengthened.

It was decided to pursue ways to strengthen joint cooperation on human rights legal and judicial issues through diplomatic channels.

In another step, the Secretary of the I.R of Iran's High Council for Human Rights also attended the representatives of the member countries of the Non-Aligned Movement and explained the positions of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the field of human rights.

Gharibabadi in the meeting referred to the common challenges facing non-aligned countries, including unilateral coercion, terrorism and the selective and political approach of Western countries to human rights and the use of tools to exercise pressure on developing countries and members of the Non-Aligned Movement, and called on member countries to unite and take a principled stand against the Western approach of the Human Rights Council.

Referring to the adoption of a national resolution and the Special Rapporteur's mission against Iran under pressure from several Western countries, Gharibabadi called on non-aligned countries to continue their support for Iran and to oppose this political and selective approach of Western countries fundamentally.

During the meeting, the ambassadors and representatives of Azerbaijan, Sri Lanka, and Syria also spoke and criticized the use of human rights as a tool, opposing politicization, selective behavior, and unilateral coercion against countries.

It is noteworthy that in this meeting, the ambassadors and representatives of 35 non-aligned countries, including India, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Belarus, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Morocco, Algeria, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba, Myanmar, Palestine, Laos, Pakistan, Bolivia, South Africa and Jordan participated.
