Official: Committee of People’s Rights Protection to be formed

  • Official: Committee of People’s Rights Protection to be formed

Iran’s High Council for Human Rights plans to interfere more seriously in human rights cases, says the secretary of the organization.

In a press conference, Kazem Gharibabadi announced the formation of the Committee of People’s Rights Protection within the country’s High Council for Human Rights.

Comprising 85 members representing various organizations of the country, the committee is scheduled to start working on Wednesday in the presence of representatives from the three branches of government.

Concerned with the observation of human rights by Iranian institutions, the Committee of People’s Rights Protection will identify processes or behaviors disruptive to people’s rights and take expert measures to resolve them.

Gharibabadi described the trip by Alena Douhan, the United Nations Special Rapporteur ‎on the Negative Impact of Unilateral Coercive Measures on the Enjoyment of ‎Human Rights as successful.

Emphasizing that Douhan’s stance and report at a ‎press conference in Tehran proved that the United States’ unilateral sanctions against Iranians have caused many problems for the people, he added, “This is contrary to the claim of US officials that the sanctions are against the regime and not the people.”

The secretary stressed that according to Douhan’s report, the unilateral sanctions have violated all human rights of Iranians.

Gharibabadi considers the negative impacts of US-imposed sanctions to be an issue with trans-partisan scopes, maintaining that experts and the media had better look at it as a national project, and not as an issue of dispute ‎among political groups.‎
