Special Rapporteur’s actions constitute support for terror: Iran’s official

  • Special Rapporteur’s actions constitute support for terror: Iran’s official

Secretary of Iran’s High Council for Human Rights Kazem Gharibabadi has strongly criticized the activities and biased stances of Special Rapporteur on human rights in Iran Javaid Rehman with regard to terrorist groups.

In a letter to the head of the UN Human Rights Council Václav Bálek and High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, Gharibabadi referred to Rehman’s attendance in a parliamentary session in the UK on July 18, saying his presence demonstrated his endorsement of the Mujahedin-e-Khalq Organization (MKO) terrorist group.

“The actions perpetrated by the (MKO) terrorist group against the innocent populace of Iran stand as a stark example of crimes against humanity and genocide,” he said.

Gharibabadi said Rehman’s presence at the meeting also proved that his appointment as the so-called special rapporteur on human rights in Iran was based on political considerations and had nothing to do with human rights.

“Why does Javaid Rehman, professing to champion the human rights of the Iranian populace, persist in an ominous silence regarding the imposition of sweeping unilateral sanctions and the manifold perpetrations of terrorism against the Iranian people?” he asked.

“Not a single statement in defense of the terror and sanction-afflicted victims in Iran has emanated from him, nor has he engaged in a single academic or elucidative meeting concerning the egregious infringement upon the rights of the Iranian people due to both terrorism and sanctions,” the top Iranian rights official added.
