Teaching Holy Quran as an alternative punishment for driving offender: Judiciary

  • Teaching Holy Quran as an alternative punishment for driving offender: Judiciary

A delinquent resident in Urmia city was sentenced to 250 hours of attending a Quran memorization class and providing free teaching to inmates due to careless driving.

"Mohsen Moradi," the head of the criminal court at Shahid Beheshti Complex in Urmia, and the country's top judge said that a person who was sentenced to six months in prison for careless driving, was assigned to 250 hours of teaching the Holy Quran to the inmates as an alternative punishment.

“Enforcing such sentences has lowered the crime rate and it also allows judges to decide cases based on the personality and the expertise of the accused and the type of crimes committed," he added.

It is worth mentioning that alternative punishments to imprisonment and sentencing convicts to public services are the most important achievements of the new Islamic Penal Code adopted in 2013.
